Background and Aim:Advances in genetics and assisted reproductive technologies have enabled the use of genetic interventions to prevent hereditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis. This study aimed to examine the legal and ethical dimensions of genetic interventions in embryos produced through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using a descriptive-analytical approach. Methods: Data were collected and analyzed through a library-based study of Iranian laws and regulations, Islamic jurisprudential sources, bioethical principles, and relevant scientific studies on genetic diagnosis and interventions. Ethical Considerations:The ethical analysis focused on respect for human dignity, protection of embryonic interests and rights, informed parental consent, the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence, justice, confidentiality of genetic information, and prevention of genetic discrimination. A distinction was also made between genetic interventions intended to prevent or treat serious diseases and those aimed at enhancing non-medical characteristics. Results: Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD/ PGT) can play an important role in preventing the transmission of cystic fibrosis. However, direct gene editing of embryos involves greater challenges, including safety, consent, professional liability, and the rights of future generations. Moreover, the absence of comprehensive regulations governing human genetic interventions in Iranian law highlights the need for a clear legal and ethical framework. Conclusion: The use of genetic technologies to prevent severe diseases may be considered acceptable when conducted in accordance with Islamic jurisprudential, legal, ethical, and medical principles. Developing clear regulations, ensuring specialized oversight, and protecting the dignity and rights of future generations are essential for the responsible development of these technologies.
