The Role of Dentists in Supporting Victims of Domestic Violence: Diagnosis and Communication

Background and Aim: Domestic violence is one of the pervasive problems of different societies and since a long time, countries around the world have been looking for solutions to prevent and repair the damage caused by such violence. For many years and with the increasing spread of domestic violence, countries are trying to support the vulnerable segment of society, which includes mostly women and children, with the cooperation of doctors and especially dentists, to check the statistics of these people and the amount of injuries inflicted on them and to prevent Such violence and support for the victims of domestic violence should be considered. With the ever-increasing progress of science and technology, dentists can be the main pillars of diagnosing domestic violence, which is often used by someone inside the house against another person, with detailed examinations of the jaw and teeth, head and neck and fractures in the jaw and face bone. Also, bruises around and inside the mouth and such examinations should be performed. The most important challenge for dentists is approaching people suspected of experiencing domestic violence, which should be accompanied by sensitivity and empathy, because in these cases, feeling safe and creating an honest relationship is of particular importance. One of the other challenges is identifying children who are victims of domestic violence, which in most cases is not paid attention to and is not reported to the authorities, because in most cases, due to the child's age, the attending physician may assume that the cause of the injuries was caused by the child falling.
Methods: This article is written in a descriptive-analytical way.
Ethical Considerations: In all stages of writing the present research, while respecting the originality of the texts, honesty and trustworthiness have been observed.
Results: This review adds to the identification of abuse in dental settings, various legal sources and organizations related to it and how to better equip dentists to deal with it. It also highlights the vital role of dental service providers in recognizing the signs of domestic violence, promoting intervention and support and emphasizes helping the well-being and safety of people affected by domestic violence.
Conclusion: Dentists, due to their direct access to victims of domestic violence, play a crucial role in identifying and reporting such cases. Their ability to recognize physical injuries and refer victims to the appropriate authorities can help protect victims' rights and prevent further violence. Education and awareness-raising for this group of professionals serve as an effective tool in supporting victims and promoting human rights.
